The Gonstead System of Chiropractic begins with a basic bio-mechanical principle of physics. Every engineer, architect, builder, and carpenter knows the importance of a proper foundation in constructing a building as this insures durability and longevity. Any shift in the foundation can cause a great deal of deviation at the top of the structure and ultimately bring its collapse. This principle applies to the human body.

The body’s foundation is based in the pelvic bone. When this structure, consisting of the lower back and hip bones, is level, this brings optimal balance and stability to the spinal structure. When the pelvic bone or any of the spinal segments become tilted or rotated out of their proper position (ie. misaligned), this can cause pressure on the discs (and in many cases, the condition of the disc is the key to the patient’s health issues).

Misalignment often results in the pinching or compressing of the nerves that run through and/or behind the discs. The compressed nerves often become inflamed, which interrupts transmission of impulses to the various sections of the body. Vertebra can become misaligned either from the cumulative effects of repetitive minor episodes or from a single accident. A simple bio-mechanical change can lead to a countless list of ailments and pain.

The ability to recognize and correct misalignment is an integral part of the Gonstead Concept. When the lower portion of the spinal column has misaligned vertebra, the body tries to keep itself upright and straight, often overcompensating in the vertebra above. This is the body’s attempt to re-establish its normal perpendicular position. For complete and lasting correction, all misaligned vertebrae must be identified and then restored back to their normal position through a proper program.
